When the school presented the rag cheque a star was asked to do the honours. One year we were lucky to get a cast member of Coronation Street. Unfortunately on the day of the presentation, he had to be called into the studio to refilm. After some frantic phonecalls, I managed to get a Canadian ice hockey star to do the presentation. Unfortunately news of the change of star did not reach JD who came up to the star held out his hand and immediately said ' I have not seen it since Martha Longhurst died in the snug'. There was a deafening silence until the Canadian turned to me and said ' who the hell is this guy'. JD often reminded of this event and we always had a good laugh over it. John was always supportive of each and every member of the school, students and staff and it was his caring belief for every individual that developed into ' the Wales way'. His belief in supporting the extension of the international programme gave both students and staff opportunities in experiencing different cultures, something that is not even possible in most schools in the UK. He is fondly remembered in Paraguay, Philippines, Morocco, South Korea and Romania in enabling members of their school communities to visit the UK. He was a visionary and there will never be another like John Day. Gareth Hughes
